Welcome!
I am Matthew Quintano and I teach middle school special education. I graduated from Saginaw Valley State University in 2012 with a Bachelor's degree in education. I am certified to teach K-12 special education and secondary history. This will be my fourth year teaching at Harbor Beach Community Schools in the middle school. I have been trained in the Multi-Sensory Orton-Gillingham reading program to enhance student letter recognition and decoding abilities. Along with Orton-Gillingham, I use other materials that focuses on reading fluency, reading comprehension, decoding, spelling, and sentence structure. I also use a math program known as SRA Math Connections. This program focuses on students mastering foundational math concepts, understanding word problems, and life skills concepts like counting money and transactions. Also, I and many others have been trained in the Peer-to-Peer Autism Program. We call this program "Beach Buddies". This program links students with autism with other peers to enhance social interactions and behaviors.
I am also involved in sport activities at the middle school and high school level. This will be my 2nd year as the varsity softball coach. I also assist the Under 14 and Under 12 summer softball teams as well. I believe having a structured program throughout all age levels is highly important for future success at the varsity level. I also coach 6th grade boys basketball and assists with 3rd-5th grade programs. The boys basketball youth program has benefited in the last two years playing a league that consists of area teams. This league has improved the skills and the competitive level for youth sports. This will be my 3rd year coaching basketball at this level. I also like to involve high school students to help with practice and games. This allows them to gain leadership, responsibility, and communication qualities.
I look forward to another great year at Harbor Beach for academics and athletics!
